What the extra cost of mobile actually pays for
Mobile detailing isn't priced higher because the work is different. It's priced higher because of what the detailer has to bring and absorb:
- Travel time and fuel, built into the price of every job
- A full set of equipment — water tank, power, steam gear, vacuums — loaded and unloaded at every stop, instead of staying bolted to one shop floor
- Your time back. The 10-20% premium is roughly what an hour or two of your afternoon is worth to most people: no dropping off, no waiting room, no coordinating a ride home and back
For us specifically, you're also getting two people working the same vehicle at the same time, which is a big part of why a complete detail takes about four hours instead of all day.
When a drop-off shop actually makes more sense
We'll say this plainly, because a straight answer is more useful than a sales pitch: if you specifically want paint correction or ceramic coating, a specialty shop with the right equipment and cure-time setup is the better call. We don't offer ceramic coating, and we'll tell you that upfront rather than upsell you into something we don't do well. We've written more about that decision, and what we do instead.
A shop can also make sense if you don't mind being without your vehicle for a day and the shop's price is meaningfully lower. That's a legitimate trade if your schedule allows for it.
When mobile is close to the only realistic option
For boats and RVs, this isn't really a close call. Most shops in North Idaho aren't set up to detail a boat still on its trailer or a 30-foot motorhome in a bay built for sedans. Boat detailing and RV detailing both happen wherever the boat or RV already is — your driveway, a storage lot, or the marina — because that's the only practical way to do it.
